Can they be used as a watering tool by filling with water and placed upside down in container gardens?

Yes you can just make sure you push the neck of the bottle far enough down to get to the root system.

Yes, I do this all of the time. Make sure they are clean and they will work without having to buy the glass ones in town.

How do I use a glass bottle to water houseplants and outdoor container plants. After cleaning the bottle, do I fill the entire bottle with water? Or do I leave air in the bottle? Do I plunge the neck of the "open" bottle into the soil? Or do I place something in the neck of the the bottle before using? Thank you for sharing .

A method I use seems to work OK. For me, at least. After use, I thoroughly clean a 2 litre plastic milk container, insert a very thin piece of plastic tubing into the open top, with the end of the tube fixed to a small rock or metal nut, whatever is small enough to fit through the mouth of the bottle. I make the knot in the plastic tube not overly tight, so that water can pass through it. The tube is cut long enough to reach the plant to be watered. A siphon is started by gently sucking on the end of the tube. Once started, the siphon will last until the container is empty. Using approx. 24"to 30" of tube will give about 1 or 2 drops a second, although this will depend on the height of the container above the plant. For long term watering, I have used a 20 litre (approx. 5 gallons) container, with 12 tubes going to different plants. This lasts for more than a day, with the plants getting a good deep soaking. Suitable soluble fertilizer can be added to the water after the siphon is started.

Absolutely! Just use them like those fancy glass bulb waterers. Spiffy them up with dollar store gems or etch the glass. Your imagination is the limit!
