How do I trim (or do i trim) back my butterfly bushes?

I have three butterfly bushes and I'm not sure if I am suppose to trim them back in the fall or wait until early spring. And, how short do I trim them? TY.

I trim mine down to about a foot so I know exactly where they are. Come spring when the new shoots start out of the ground trim the old ones back low. I do mine every fall and this year they were as tall as I am. August they were covered in monarch butterfly caterpillars.
