This is a bromeliad. They grow in moist and covered jungle type areas.
They are usually take in their water and nutes thru the cup towards the base of the plant. Don't just fill the cup up and let it be. You will need to change the water frequently. Think of it as doing what nature does. The plant normally gets the cup filled via rain water to they always have a fresh supply of water. You wouldn't drink slimy water and the plant doesn't want to either.
I worked at a place called The Bromeliad Connection in Austin Texas for about a year. So we had these everywhere.
So indirect sunlight and keep them moist. They like a shower everyday. Just use a spray bottle and give them a light mist.

That looks like it has a bit too much water and needs to be thinned.

Easy to take pieces off and just stick in the dirt and it will reproduce it self. Do not leave out in cold weather.
