I have a bunch of really sprouted (1" at least) potatoes - what is the best way to plant these to re-produce? I love, love my potatoes (and so does my dog Chico) !

  • Stick them in a glass of water and let them root. Once chance of frost has passed, here is what you can do with them.

Top photo was sweet potato from last year, bottom photo is what I started a couple weeks ago.

Making sure to have at least two eyes on each piece of potato, cut into chunks. Soak overnight in a bucket of water. Place each piece in a hole about three inches deep. I just put the shovel in the ground, push it forward, drop in the piece, and release the dirt back around it. No special fertilizers needed... I place egg shells over each hole to control slugs and to know where I planted... and coffee grounds on my soil after the sprouts are up. Wait until the plants start to die back in the fall and dig up the little potatoes. Oh, did I mention, plant at least one foot apart for small potatoes variety and two feet apart for larger varieties. Happy gardening!

What USDA zone do you live in? If you can plant now I would get them in the ground. Since they are sprouted nestle them about halfway in the dirt; as the sprouts grow add dirt. You will end up with a potato hill.

Cut eye out taking care to cut large section of potato with it. Place on top of ground layer 4 to 6 inches straw over it.
