Easy peasy.... you will need: an avocado pit, glass container such as a small vase with a skinny neck like a "Good Seasons" salad dressing bottle, and 3-4 round toothpicks.
About 2/3 of the way up from the pointed end of the pit... stick the tooth picks into the seed... push them in about 1/8 inch or so... far enough to support the seed on the rim of the bottle/vase. Fill the vase with water up to the rim, rest the toothpicks on the rim of the vase so the bottom part of the seed is in the water. Set on a window ledge or shelf... in a location where you will see it everyday. Keep refilling the vase to maintain the water level at the rim... so the lower part of the seed stays wet..... ONLY change the water when necessary and only if it gets really stinky.... the seed will probably split where the main roots emerges... re position the tooth picks if necessary.
Plant the seed only when there are a LOT of roots and once the small tree has 6-8 or more leaves.
Thank you so much!
Instead of forcing toothpicks into the pit, you may want to consider using a vase that is specially designed to hold bulbs. The vase is slightly pinched so it can cover the pit halfway with water without the pit sinking in the vase. I believe they are called forcing vases and they come in an assortment of colors and sizes. I keep my avocado start in a sunny window and change the water ever so often. It takes a long time, but when the plant gets too big for the vase it is time to plant it in a larger pot with some soil. Have fun!
