Pretty much put in good quality dirt (Miracle Gro potting mix)from a diy store, add the seeds and water. You can also root some plants from cuttings.
You can grow plants in glass containers hydroponically. There are many interesting articles about this if you google it. Also if you add some gravel to the bottom of the container, then soil and plant it will do well if you are careful not to overwater and it is a place with sunshine as needed.

I grew some herbs in glass mason jars... but, you could try small plants, too! https://www.curlycraftymom.com/2016/05/herb-garden-with-personalized-tin.html
Keep in mind, it's easy to over-water in glass since there are no drain holes but it does make for a nice look.

Hello. I have recently started putting smaller plants in thrifted glass jars and they’ve had amazing responses very happily accommodating to an open ended plain clear glass container. I recommend that you give it a try.
You Neto put mall rock on the bottom of he just first so the roots don’t rot then add dirt.
What kinds of plants
