It all depends on what you are trying to protect from the wind-house (maybe to lower energy costs), garden, driveway... and how far away you can make the barrier.
Giant Green Thuja grow about 3'/year up to 60', they are shaped like a pyramid and adaptable to many soil types. Plant 5-6' apart for a privacy screen or 10-12'apart in full to partial sun. The base is 12-20'. Zone 5-8. They have them at Four Seasons Nursery, the more you buy the cheaper per tree.

Trees are always a great choice. Investigate what grows best in your area.
Hi Mary, not sure how large you want it, but, you could build a section or two of this.

Arborvitaes make a great windbreak. Great time to them them in bulk in spring and fall. Many nurseries will ship direct. Try places like Michigan Bulb etc. Lots of places will charge less for bulk orders. Arborvitaes come in different shades are green all the way to the ground and grow tall depending on the variety.
Hello Mary,
Grow Trees Shrubs in a line. Build a wall with decorative gaps in it. Build a Fence with gaps for the air to pass through. You could do one or all of these if you have the space!
How much time do you have? If your patient a windbreak of cedars is a nice choice.
Hello. Planting the appropriate windscreen trees ir shrubs might be suggested.
for the best local professional advice
I would highly suggest contacting your local cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.
Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.
