I would use a seed starter mix, Stan.
Stan, I use Miracle Grow seed starting mix in small, 2 1/4" round peat pots to get the seeds to germinate without them 'dampening off' and dying. Then, after the 2nd set of leaves have grown out on the seedlings, I use regular Miracle Grow soil and 'plant' each small peat pot and plant into the middle of separate 5" peat pots. This gives the seedlings more room to grow and also gives them all the fertilizer they'll need until they are transplanted out in the garden or flower beds. My plants are always very strong, healthy, and large when I put them out in the ground, there is never any transplant shock, and the peat pots turn into fertilizer for the plants during the rest of the growing season. It's all a win-win situation for early producing crops. Good Luck and Happy Gardening!!
Miracle seed starting mix and peat pots. Just put all into the ground when the plants are big enough and the ground is warm.
Hi Stan. I like the peat pods they work well. I have used all sorts of soils. Sometimes I get inpatient and don't feel like going to to the store to get more seed starter mix. The starter mix is more loose with more organic matter. You can also mix your own using 50/50 potting soil and peat moss.
