I am not 100% sure, but I think I read that uneven watering can cause this. Check with your local nursery or college extension experts.

They have grown too big for their skins........
they split because they are getting too much water after not getting enough, or, as Grandmasue said, uneven watering. Usually, when it has been really hot and they are drier, then a rain comes, you will see them split from the drastic change in moisture
Sometimes they grow so fast and they need more water during that time, a deep soaking not just a sprinkling. There is also a tomato virus that causes them to split. I'm sorry, can't think of the name of it just now but a garden dept. at Lowe's or Home Depot should know about it and how to treat the plants for it. Good luck!
