Hi there, wood is always a nice option for an island :)

Quartz is very popular. Granite is durable, comes in various depths, but you cannot permit acids (lemon juice, tomato products, etc.) to come in contact. It is great for baker's, because pastry stays cool.

Marble will stain unless carefully sealed, at least 2x/year. Granite also should be sealed, particularly if it contains much "graining".

Wood looks great, but needs sealing, hot pads and trivets, and care when cutting.

Corian can chip and scratch, and has fallen out of favor in some areas of the country.

All surfaces should be used with hot pads or trivets, and knives should only be used with cutting boards, tomprotect surfaces.

Are you truing to fix the countertops you already have? You can always paint the counters: https://www.thriftyfun.com/tf999197.tip.html

I would consider how you will be using your island when picking a countertop. Wood countertops are beautiful, but if you bake and plan to use that space to roll dough, it won't be very practical. Quartz and granite are great options for countertops that will be used for food prep because they clean up easily.
