Contact paper or peel & stick vinyl. Amazon has hundreds of colors & patterns available.
If you have already painting them before, why not repaint them in a different color?
Careful contact paper ? I patched my wood ones and they look fine...
Plastic or wood picture frames, glued on or use Command strips or hangers. Go country or modern, and you have a unique treatment.
My vote is for Jewell's suggestion as removing contact paper later on can be troublesome (read nightmare) down the road. See if anything here excites you.

How about giving the kitchen a fresh coat of paint and change the hardware on the cabinets? Update a few kitchen accessories and maybe that will do the trick.

Hi Barbara, My recommendation would be to paint them. You could use a brand meant for metal like Rustoleum. It's very good. You can alsolookat replacing the hardware or using self-stick films to give you a new look. Prep well, and you should have a great finish.
