Whatever you do, don’t skimp on the prep work and make sure they’re squeaky clean.
I would never put a mat or a flat finish paint on them, because it’s not scrubbable. That includes chalk paint sorry.
If you’re going to paint them, which is very popular here in this forum, then make sure you buy a paint that is labeled for kitchen and bath use.

I used tsp cleaner, kilz primer, and Benjamin Moore advance alkyl paint applied with a foam roller. It has been very durable these four years so far!
Hardware stores are selling easy application paint that you can use for your cabinets. It will be good to bring a door to the stores with to detect kind of wood to make your painting life easier. You may also use some stain too ... Post some pictures so we can help more
