I need some ideas for refinishing kitchen cabinets.

I have a huge eat-in kitchen with custom built cabinets. They were built in the late 70's and are in dire need of a face lift. I have 46 cabinet doors and 19 drawer fronts all covered with veneer. I don't mind wood finish.

OK DIY community, give me your best advice for refinishing veneer, or how to update on a budget.

  • Painting the cabinets is the easiest way to update them. Clean them well because kitchens get greasy, then use a good primer like Zinnser BIN. Then paint them. Changing out the hardware is also an easy fix.

You could also consider taking some of the doors off, plugging up the hardware holes and painting the inside of the cabinet too. This would enable you to display some of your kitchenware for a “farmhouse” kind of look! Hope you post whatever you do...before and after!

Hi Cindy, lucky you having a big kitchen like that! First and foremost, add additional lighting. There is never enough light in a kitchen. Install under the cabinet lighting that's battery operated and remote controlled. Change up your overhead lights. Paint your pulls and knobs something new. Use 3 thin coats of sealer when finished to make sure the paint lasts. Clean up your cabinets and use a good quality furniture polish when done. Last, repaint the kitchen with a lighter tone of the paint you have and love. Unless your cabinets are in bad shape, my advise is not to paint them. A good wood cabinet is always popular given the right "jewelry" (hardware), surroundings and lighting. Good luck.

Before you jump in..... do a little "research"

DIYnetwork.com or HGTV.com or Pinterest.com will give you a place to find ideas....print off the looks you like to compare later...

Darker lowers, lighter uppers, fun colors.... you will find lots of ideas there... and also in some of the home decorating magazines.
