I suggest removing one of the smaller cabinet doors or even a drawer front, then scuff slightly with fine sandpaper and paint with a stain-blocking primer, then in the paint of your color choice and finish (probably a cabinet type enamel. See how that turns out before deciding to do the remaining cabinets or not.

It does not matter what they are made of, just clean well, prime with Kilz, and paint and then seal. You can use an acrylic based latex paint it you wish and then seal with several layers of polycrylic.

You could also consider replacing the doors and drawer fronts.

Beadboard is thin and not heavy. You could glue (Loctite in a caulking tube) and then trim the edges with thin trim boards. Paint any color you want. Beadboard is under $20 for a 4' x 8' piece. Will cover several doors. Stain or paint the trim, paint the beadboard. Change out the hardware. Hobby Lobby has a HUGE online selection of cool knobs and pulls.

The additional weight of the thin wood would be fine for the cabinet hinges.

You can clean and cover with contact paper or removable wallpaper.

As long as you use a primer, they should be paintable.

We had one of the ugliest kitchen islands ever and ended up covering with bead board and then painting. Looks great and it was fairly cheap and easy to do.

I realize you are talking about cupboards but thought I would float this idea out there.

Hi! I would remove any loose finish (a hair dryer should loosen the adhesive), clean it with a TSP substitute and prime it with Kilz. Then you can paint it. An alternative is refacing the cabinet doors or covering them. Good luck!

The doors and cabinets are probably made with partical board and/or MDF. You can paint over the veneer if it is in tack. May take several coats, but a good cleaning, then a primer/sealer then a good quality paint may do it for you..

We had those exact cabinets in our first house. They were like a brown contact paper material. Terrible. We painted them. We used a really good primer, like two coats and then rolled the paint on. They looked fabulous and lasted several years until we ripped them out for a renovation. Good luck!
