How to Make Your Windows Look Bigger With Curtains
I love curtains- my mom always hated them, but I think they add such nice texture and warmth to a room, and if you hang them up right, they can make your windows look so much bigger!
You don’t need anything special for this hack. Just LONG curtains (floor length), and a curtain rod (see how I made 2 five foot curtain rods for only $10 here).
You can see in this photo, our windows are average sized, but hanging the curtains the right way makes them feel much bigger.
The secret- hang them high and wide.
HANG THEM HIGH.
First, installing your rod close to the ceiling and having the curtains go all the way to the floor, draws the eyes up (and down), making the window feel taller. I didn’t want to move the curtain rod/drill extra holes in my wall to illustrate this, but I used my bad photoshop skills to show you a comparison.
HANG THEM WIDE.
Thanks to an adjustable curtain rod, this point was easier to illustrate. You can see once we moved the curtains out wider than the window, it suddenly seems much bigger.
Next up I need to hem the curtains. I like them when they just “kiss” the floor, but some people like the length.
We also used this trick on the sliding glass door that goes out to our deck. Floor length curtains are of course a bit more pricey, but for the effect they can bring, they’re so worth it!

I like this idea but I hang two 15 inch rods half and half off my windows and hand long curtains on them. This way the whole window trim doesn't show but it looks so much bigger. Have you tried it.

I used 4 panels instead of 2 , hanging just past window width looks richer.

Looks much bigger. Hint. Put a small support bracket to hold the center of the rod. Paint the bracket the same color as the wall and the part that supports the rod is almost not seen. Just a U shaped support under the rod and two screws on the wall. You can also stiffen a sagging rod by adding a pvc pipe to the inside for strength.
