Fireplace Makeover: Building a Mantel

I’ve always heard that one project leads to another. Well, it’s true…because now that I have finished building the mantel I have always wanted, I have so much more that I want to do to our kitchen now. We have a fireplace in our kitchen because the room is really a kitchen/family room combo...but we decided we didn't need another room to watch TV. So, we just have one big kitchen with a fireplace!
I never liked that shelf that went across the top, it seemed pointless to me. Just a dust catcher really...
The previous owners painted the bricks...to look like bricks. (???)
I had quite a mess after removing the tiles and the shelf at the top.
I set the frame and added the rest of my materials. This was the first time I had really worked with a miter saw, so it took me a few times to get the trim right.
Here's how it looks now. I really could have filed this under "ask a question" since I still haven't decided on tile and would love a few more pieces to decorate with. I would love some suggestions...thanks!!
Painted the bricks gray after two coats of primer...just in case.
