How to German Schmear a cinder block fireplace?




In my new house there is a fireplace made out of cinderblocks. Previous owner painted them to look like brick. Cannot afford to redo. Was thinking to german schmear the stone and paint the ceramic tile hearth with a rust colored stencil. Will this look stupid?

If only painted and not actually built up texture, I don't think the schmere will work. You can add the veneer bricks to the concrete blocks and then do it.
Do you have a picture Carolyn? I am trying to picture in my head cinderblocks that look like brick? I personally love the german schmear look so I am all for it. When you say rust colored stencil what kind of design are you thinking? I love the painted tile stencil! I think it would totally work. You could actually just dry brush the paint over top, which is almost what the German Schmear is. Here is this tutorial as well:
