paint is great option.
You could simply whitewash paint it or clad over it with mdf board and trim for a more traditional look
Painting it would be nice makeover. Some of the home improvement shows tile over the brick —if that suits your aesthete. Look to Houzz and Pinterst for visual inspiration.
We bought river stones and had them used to cover our fireplace which was hideous brick painted white. We had a professional do the work. He patiently cut and fit the stones to cover the fireplace. Later on I added the mantle. It’s been over 20 years.
