Change out the pillows for a bright color. Blues/aquas look nice with brown and beige. If u like yellows and oranges they would be a good alternative. A throw in a color coordinating with the pillows would add the welcoming feeling u are looking for. Finding some art work and different lamp to pick up the colors of the pillows would tie it all together.

Do you think I should add a slip cover to cover up the brown couch? And then add the new pillows?

    Hi Courtney,

It's just my opinion, but for me I'd want a pop of color in the room. Pick a color you like and try changing your pillows, putting a blanket or afghan across the back of your chair, finding a throw rug that could come out from under your table - things like that to give that color pop. I'd also suggest a flower arrangement on your coffee table, but it looks like you have kids and that might not work - your choice. ;) Wishing you the best.

I wasn’t sure how a rug would look with carpet. I wanted to hang buffalo plaid curtains definitely change the pillows but I wasn’t sure what colors would match and maybe add a slip cover over the couches becausw I’m not a fan of the brown but its what I have so I’m trying to work with what I have as far as furniture goes.

First you might want to,add. Little color. Nothing to bold. May be a light pale yellow, light blue. Then take the fish and deer head and move them to one wall. Together. rearange the pic behind couch. Leave the left one where it is then take the other one and place it a little down maybe 5-6 in to the right. Than take your tobacco basket and turns it length ways on the right of you pics.

Never, ever underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint! Also, the dark fan blades on the ceiling fan make the room look shorter. Check the blades because you might be able to turn the blades over. Some come with two finishes. Also, a strategically placed mirror will bring in more light

Color is very personal and as long as you add the color around the room (I. E. Paint a wall, a few pillows with the color and some decorations with the same color) then you can use virtually any color you choose. I really like sage greens with brown. A mirror above the couch will bring in light. If you paint one accent wall, I would still paint the other walls too. I like a soft taupe. And then place touches of a deep contrast color like Burgundy. I used these colors. My inspiration was a little fishing plaque I loved. It had all the colors together. Pick a favorite object or fabric print and mimic the colors in your room.

All the suggestions above are sound. Foremost, you need a splash of color as the room is too neutral. A colorful area rug would do wonders and you can go off on some of the colors for the pillows.

You definitely need some color. Spray paint the base of your lamp. Possibly paint your coffee table a lighter color. Add some colorful pillows. You could also add a stencil or strip of fabric at the bottom of your curtains.

I think a buffalo pattern curtain would do this room some justice. I’m in between gray black or tan?

How about some pattern, not saying yellow is your color but it could brighten your day.....

add a colorful area rug.... https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/latitude-run-hector-area-rug-ltrn5046.html?piid=18100742

    pillows... https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/sb1/yellow-and-gold-decorative-pillows-c417136-a9706~33313.html

Paint your lampbase yellow and I would even paint that coffee table base a pale yellow with the natural wood top.

A thin rug looks fine over carpet. I've done that. You don't want a heavy plush one though. If you use Buffalo plaid curtains, you're still keeping the darker colors and you'd have to use another solid color for you sofa if you do a slip cover. If you don't like the brown, the sofa is a great place to pile up pillows and use a colored afghan or soft throw blanket on the back. Looks like your table has room for baskets - baskets are farmhouse-like and can keep things tidy. Since you like farmhouse, you could use some chalk paint on the coffee table. I love the metal gromets on the drapes. I'm not sure why the drapes are closed. If it's about privacy, you could put up blinds and let the sunshine in and close the drapes for night privacy.

Lastly, the hardware store has a swing arm lamp you can mount on the wall which you could mount higher than the lamp you have, it take up less space, and draw your eye up.

Let me know how. It works out

You definitely need some contrast. I have been a realtor for a long time, Since I see taupes and browns and keeping the furniture. I might suggest a warm grey for walls and perhaps one wall with a bit of color as an accent wall- I might suggest a rust or mid blue tone--then just add pillows on the sofa with some grey and taupe and the accent color you choose in them. Since you said welcoming...I must say that the epidermy is not. Instead of a room filled with life, it looks like there are dead things in it.

If it was mine First I would paint the walls a lighter color and a lighter pair of curtins and a flower arrangement on the coffee table

  • Rosetta Rosetta on Mar 25, 2018

Oh I forgot and a large picture or mirror behind the couch

  • Eileen Eileen on Mar 26, 2018

Did u want to change the color of the couch? Personally I am not a fan of slip covers. I have used them to cover a couch that had seen better days but unless u buy very expensive ones they come un-tucked and look sloppy. From the picture the couch looks like it is in good shape so unless u want a different color I wouldn't bother. If u put the throw over the back of the couch it would "tone down" the brown too.
