Place a piece of apple in your cookie jar along with the cookies and they should stay soft.
Storing hard cookies with soft ones will ruin the hard cookies. Most of today's cookie jars lack adequate seals to keep cookies air tight, and porcelain/ceramic cookie jars made today are poor at keeping cookies fresh.
Tightly sealed tins or tightly sealing Tupperware/Rubbermaid containers are better, in many cases.
Place waxed paper between cookie layers, and beneath the tin's lid.
Remember to "burp" plastic containers to avoid trapping air in containers.
Foods can get stale even in jars that seal tightly. Basically as a storage jar is emptied there is more air than cookies which hastens staleness. I agree with Olivia that it's better to store cookies in smaller containers that seal tightly. If your cookies are not being eaten within a week, your cookie jar should be considered a decoration.
Lock & Lock is one of the best containers I have found that is reasonably priced and keeps cookies fresh.
You can try spritzing with water and warming in the microwave for 5 seconds to try and save your cookies.
Zip lock baggies inside jar with piece of apple inside. push air out of baggie before sealing it each time
