My first thought was bookends! You can virtually use anything heavy enough as a book end. I just recently made a little magazine rack to hold my books.
Any sturdy surface works well for organizing books. I don't recommend the floor though because it blocks walking areas and can be a safety hazard. Group them in categories and use things like tabletop surfaces that are narrow if possible so not to put books in front of one another. If you do have several areas for books, sort them into groups, then store the entire group in different areas of the home. You can check out my post about how to group the books here: https://sabrinasorganizing.com/ways-to-organize-your-books/ Good luck.
If you have floorspace a narrow, multi tiered baker's rack is particularly handy for books.
I keep mine in a drawer with the spines up, so I can see what they are.
