How do I store shoes in a tiny closet?

I have a very tiny closet in our bedroom that will only hold my clothes and shoes. I love boots and shoes was trying to find a way to get rid of the shoe boxes and hang up my boots. I tried using a pants hanger with the clips, but the boots were too heavy. Picture a possible 5X5 closet space. I added shelving and ended up losing one side of the close to purses, shoes and misc.
