Garden critters?

I have a raised bed garden of vegetables and herbs but critters continue to dig it up. How do I keep them out?

  • You will probably need to attach wire around it, Donna.

You could try some push in fencing found at any local improvement store. It comes in a few different heights, lengths and patterns so depending on what critters are getting into your garden you can size it accordingly. It is so easy to poke it into the ground! I use it to keep my golden out of my raised gardens. If you have rabbits you will have to pick a fencing they can't get through. Deer are another issue so you would have to find a way so they can't reach over the top of the fence.

I'd put up some chicken wire around the bed to keep out critters. Here are some other good ideas for fencing:

Putting the wire mesh below the dirt of below grade around the perimeter can help ground burrowing critters from evading garden. Or take a hint from the carnival "Whack-a-Mole" game.

Deer require an 8' fence, o 2 fences 4' in height, and several feet apart to keep them out ( they have poor depth perception). Groundhogs will climb fences necessitating you not fasten the top 2 feet, so their body weight causes them to fall backward. Chipmunks and birds require netting over the tops and small sized wire mesh, elsewhere.

You can try interspersing herbs critters dislike amongst your plantings, such as basil, lemongrass, lemon thyme, sage, rosemary, garlic, etc. Marigolds and a perimeter of cayenne pepper or chili powder may also help you.

We recently repurposed defunct refrigerators into a raised garden, works beautifully to keep critters out. Perfect waist height, insulated, plants are happy! Of course a fence keeps the deer out, but we aren’t dealing with the ground critters any more!
