I think it only repels deer and rabbits. Here's a link to get rid of flies:

Irish Spring soap repels mammals-such as deer, rabbits...to repel flies:
This link starts with fly traps and then goes into repellents:

IMO don't waste your time with shredding bars of soap. Once the pieces are outside, the scent quickly dissipates and is not strong enough to deter insects or wildlife.
Hi Linda, it works, here's how, simply place a bar of Irish Spring soap in a mesh bag and hang the bag in areas where you spend time outdoors. Pests hate the strong smell of soap. All it takes is a light breeze to keep the flies away, so you can enjoy the outdoors without having to swat them all the time.
here is another idea

I did and noticed they stay away from the soap but they will come within 4 feet of where it is hanging.
Doesn't last long at all. Seems a waste for something that doesn't work.
I use Ivory soap to keep the Blue Jays away. I do not have flies, so maybe it works with that too.
Hello. I am not sure of the ideal repellent situation has been solved. Prevention might be a good line of attack to consider. Here’s a link.

I beg to differ “I am NOT Stupid…Charlie
I really did not believe this would work, but it did!
I cut up a bar of soap and put it in areas where flies come into the house and I have not seen a fly in 3 days!
Thank you
It works ! I have had flies in my house this year it’s bad and we don’t leave any doors or windows open we are in Texas! I put around my patio door, barn and sitting area outside I ate my lunch outside not one fly and no flies in house today!! Now I don’t know how long it’s gonna last though but spending $12 for mega pack of Irish spring at Walmart and mesh bags off Amazon Iam happy!
I use side my rv and have used in my home. It keeps them out of both. I never used outside. But in home it really works.
Here's a post that might help https://chascrazycreations.com/irish-spring-soap-and-flies/
I thought this could not be so simple.
So bought a 12 pack of Irish spring and went about hanging one at each doorway and a couple hanging from ac vents in both my house and business. Noticed a massive difference next day and 3 weeks later still virtually no flies.
