Either dig them up or smother them out with newspapers and cardboard, use heavy landscape fabric and top with a few inches of cedar mulch.

If you can just smother them with 8 layers of newspaper or 1 layer of unfinished cardboard. Pull what you can and cut down what you can't, lay down your paper, wet it, and either throw a layer of compost to boost and build up your soil then mulch, or just throw some mulch down, 3-4" layer should do. Any weeds that sprout will be from airborne or birds dropping seeds and will be on top and easy to pull. Good luck!

Lay a few layers of newspapers or a layer of cardboard around the plants put a good layer of mulch on top.
