The best way is to trap them. You need to find out which holes they use most often then dig a BIGGER hole from that one and set one trap on each side of the end of the tunnel so that no matter if he is travelling a tunnel north and south running or east and west running, either direction he travels in will trap him. It's alot of work but the most effective. I am posting a link below to show you what I mean. GOOD LUCK.

Build or buy a windmill. Worked like a charm for me.
We have good luck with the green gopher traps.
LOL my cat would run terrified in the other direction.
My yard was dangerous from the holes they left. We had to level the yard due to the damage. Then put small hole chicken wire available from garden centers, Home Depot..etc. covering the whole lawn. Three inches of dirt over wire (more and they'll tunnel over the wire.) Planted plants in baskets specifically for that. It's been years and we haven't had a single problem,
There are some sonic critter chasers that are motion activated that seem to be effective. I've used them for raccoons with success, so I don't see why they wouldn't work with gophers. They also keep the other rodent population that love my bird feeders at bay. They have an adjustment screw for different types of animals, so you can disturb gophers without disturbing your dog or birds that come. You can also adjust what type of deterrent (just high frequency or both high frequency and sound).
If you or if you know anyone who has snakes, keep the skin when they shed and place a good long piece in each in hole. They won't be back. Tried and true!
