You could rent a stump grinder or use potassium nitrate...here's an article about it:

Easiest way is to hire a stump grinding contractor. The stump and roots get chopped up and mulched into the ground.
I have tried the stump removal chemicals. Takes a LONG time and doesn't work well.
You can dig it out by cutting roots and pulling the stump.
A cheap method is to cut stump with a chain saw at ground level and then camouflage it bay covering with mulch and rocks to make a flower bed.
I'd dig them out, you'd only have to dig down maybe a foot, then cut the roots with a hand or chain saw & yank them out. I became very good at this as my yard was all woods before the house was built.
Hire a removal company they do great work, grind it down below surface and then add soil. We have done this with 3 or 4 trees with different companies all did fine work
