RoundUp is ineffective.

  • I love moss, but on a walkway it is dangerous. Plain old white vinegar will kill it, and is environmentally friendly. May take several repeat treatments, but vinegar is only $2 a gallon.

It is growing in this area because you have a fair amount of shade not enough sun so the moisture remains there to enable the moss to keep growing...you still have to scrape it off even if you kill it with white vinegar...it will not just go away it must be removed manually...

You are the second person to recommend white vinegar. I may try pressure washing to remove the dead moss. Thank you.

Try a product named Wet&Forget. Mix with water and spray on with an ordinary tank sprayer. I got one for about $7, and it can be used again and again for spraying product on moss, algae, etc. No hard scrubbing, just wait for it to work.

Power/ pressure washing worked for me.

  • Moss can be a pain to deal with at times. Even after you kill it, it can still cause an undesirable surface on a walkway. My suggestion would be to rent a pressure washer or ask around to friends and family if you can borrow one. Not only will this remove the moss but will leave the walkway looking brand new. The pressure washing would work on the flat stones of the walkway but wouldn't do well on the sides of our gravel drive - will try the recommended white vinegar there. Thank you.

I spoke to a landscaping company owner and he said to sprinkle it with baking soda--it will change the pH of the area to a pH the moss can't live in. Even better, it won't make pets or birds sick (neither will vinegar though). I copied the following information from an online source: Regular, white vinegar consists of about 5% acetic acid and 95% water. On the other hand, cleaning vinegar has an acidity of 6%. That 1% more acidity makes it 20% stronger than white vinegar. ... Distilled vinegar is milder than white vinegar and will not be effective for cleaning.

Thank you, I'll try the baking soda sprinkling method on the sides of our gravel driveway when I get back up to our NC cottage.
