Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Virginia Creeper
You might be able to kill it by pouring salt and boiling water on the plant, then of course, use a hazmat suit to remove it...whatever you do, do NOT burn it, as the smoke is just as bad as touching the plant, if not worse. You may find neighbors in the area who have a successful way to remove it.
Suit up and dig out at the roots. Treat the area with agricultural strength vinegar. There are products you can "paint" on the plant which will also kill the plant, but you still need to dig out when dead. Always bag and mark separately for your trash collectors out of courtesy and never burn.
Cut it back to about 1/2 foot tall so that you can see where it is. Dig up all the roots and if you have a soil sifter, sift out all little pieces of root. Make sure to send all pieces away in trash (do not burn! Which I doubt is an option there anyway but better safe than sorry!)
Watch carefully for any new shoots, dig them out and dispose of them immediately. It may take a couple of years before the area doesn’t sprout new shoots from the plants you removed.
An interesting tidbit- A plant that provides relief from a toxic plant is almost always nearby it’s toxic counterpart. For poison ivy it’s Virginia Creeper that grows nearby and provides protection ( and relief from the rash) just by rubbing its leaves on your skin.
Contact your local Agricultural Extension office to find out which plant grows in your area that provides help with poison oak.
I hope that helps
😊
Hi Becky,
There are several ways to remove poison oak as explained in the article below from Wikihow. At the bottom of the article there are also some tips and warnings so be sure to read that part too. Wishing you success! - Linda

Get some round up. Use gloves when you spray. Best time to spray is spring when in it's growth season. May need to re-apply after rains. He'll have to learn to stay away from the big 3 Ivy, Oak, and Sumac. Very old remedy is to use Milk Weed sap on break outs. Just snap off a leaf and use the white sap over each blister.
Do not burn these plants. Smoke from these plants can give you the worst ever case you have seen.
