How do I get rid of weeds in my yard?
My yard is nothing but weeds. I mean literally nothing but weeds. I might have a handful of grass spread over a large area but that is it. I live in Florida and the winter time is hard on my yard with it being nothing but weeds. It looks like a carpet of brown hay is spread over it. My question is how can I get rid of the weeds and get grass to grow?

A lush lawn requires maintenance. Weeds are spread by wind, wildlife and people and a healthy lawn can choke out most weeds, but there will always be some. At this point your lawn sounds like a gonner. Might be better to start from scratch and stay on top of a maintenance schedule. This is what I did in my back yard last spring. Only difference was that I used vinegar to kill off the weeds and remaining grass.

Contact your local Ag Extension or a reputable nursery for the best type of grass to grow in your area. I am in zone 9 and used marathon fescue and white clover.
My fall lawn tips are a good place to start (since you’re in Florida, you can still do many of these) https://chemistrycachet.com/easy-fall-lawn-care-tips/
get the soil in good shape, then you can throw down some grass seed in the spring ( talk to your local Extension agent on the best time). Then it just takes water and applying preemergent weed killer each season
I agree with Naomi. First you need to get rid of the weeds. Plain white vinegar, the cheapest you can find (Walmart for me) you will probably need several gallons, you may need to apply a few times. I like to put it in a garden sprayer for easy application and it helps to conserve the vinegar. the great thing with vinegar on weeds is that you are not using poisons.
Thanks everyone for all the tips, tricks, and advice.
