What is the best material to use to seal up squirrel holes in the attic?

I am asking this for a friend who has a couple of football sized holes on one wall of her attic. She has tried live trapping the squirrels, with no luck, and they continue to gnaw on her house. She wants to do the repair herself, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Unless you catch and relocate this critters all the new finish work will be gone in no time. Once they find a place to settle in for cooler months its very difficult to keep them out. If they are getting onto the roof because of tree branches they should be cut back. Any access to the roof must be made as difficult as it can be to deter them. You may want to consider a professional exterminator to rid the house of them through various methods and have them evaluate how they are getting onto home in which chew to enter. Once that is determined they can suggest many methods both DIY and professional on how to prevent them from coming back and getting in. In addition now that they have done this extent of damage, The owner should consider having the electrical wiring checked out in the attic. If they have done so much damage, its no doubt that they have chewed on things that they should not have in the attic. The exterminator can look around for you and perhaps remove any dead animals and nesting that has occurred and while they are in there they can do a look see for any damaged wires.

Woodbridge is right if you trap them inside they can eat through your ceiling and pay you a visit. Happens frequently. Have you tried trapping them in attic or outside. Use the bigger have a heart trap not small one they are not effective. Cut apples into fourhs and slather peanut butter on them. Place past the trip device at the far end of trap and in a cup or small bowl. Make sure to not block the trip device and have it on level area place in attic near where they are running. on level area so it can easily release More make sure you have cllearance all around. 8-10 inches away from anything. Leave overnight should have results next day., simply remove trap and take a long way away 20 miles or to the people you dont likes house and release. Repeat until all gone and seal the entrances
