we used bay leaves around the counter and never saw another ant.

Many herbs will work for this, including putting a sprig of something into pasta & flour, to discourage weavils. -

If they are coming in from outside the easiest way to stop them is to draw a long of chalk around the house. The don't cross the chalk. Our science professor told us that the odor of the chalk confuses them. I have never had ants inside my home. Lived here 19 years.
