I would start with steam. Also Goo Gone may be helpful

Pour Goo Gone on the carpet and give it time to soak in. When you are ready to pull it up pour boiling water on the area you working on and viola!!

Cut through carpet making strips. As you pull it up, It will likely pull away from the rubber backing. It then leaves the ahesive to deal with. There are products for removal of glue on concrete. One is Krud Krudder. Be sure your space is well ventilated Or you will be overwhelmed with fumes! Then I used a putty knife and scraped. The last thing I did was rented a floor sander and used it. I got it smooth enough that I could paint it with concrete paint. Some people have used a "terminator" which is like a sod remover but made to skim off the carpet. Good luck!!!!

Assuming it's glued down and is indoor-outdoor type carpet, I would try getting it soaking wet and seeing if I could pull it up. You would end up with glue residue and probably some patches of carpet, but it might come most of the way off. Then some sort of solvent to remove the glue, though I would check with a carpet store about what kind of solvent to use.

If it doesn't come up that way, I might try a roofing shovel to see if I could sort of chip it away. But if you have to chip at it, you're likely to damage the concrete under it, too.

  • Get a floor tile scraper.

You can cut the carpet into workable/manageable strips so you can start pulling from one end and roll the carpet strip as you roll. Some of the rubber backing may be left and that can be removed using a metal scraper. If necessary you could add some Goo-Gone or you might even use a blow torch to get the last remnants of off.
