How can I re-finish an outdoor log swing?

The log swing is in the shade during the summer and the wood has become rough, dark, and weathered - possibly even mildewed. Bees and squirrels peel off pieces of the softened wood. Should I paint? it? Use linseed oil? Sand it down?

I'd sand it smooth and apply several coats of Marine Varnish.
Sand smooth. Use Helmsman Spar Urethane.
Has the swing ever been painted or stained in any way yet?
I agree that sanding it down and adding and outdoor protectant could help.
Sand it right back, if it’s not pitted or hollowed you could treat it with a natural oil , this looks the best in my view but may not last as long as other chemical preservatives.
Yes marine varnish!! You will want to have it thick in the end which might mean a few or more coats.
Could you pressure wash it? Then treat it with marine varnish or teal oil.
I would sand it and then add a waterproof protective sealant.
Hi Dot: is it possible to put in new logs? If not, then I'd try to remove the softened wood to get to good wood and then seal that. Be sure to wear a mask because of the mildew and safety glasses in case bits pop off. Be careful and good luck.
