How do you brighten up yellowed hickory cabinets?

    Chances are, if you want to keep the wood look you will need to sand and recoat the clear finish. Water based clear coats rarely yellow while oil based ones do over time.

    If cleaning them with a TSP type product doesn't remove it, it's probably the finish itself. I would clean them first, as mentioned and then decide if I wanted to refinish them. You might think about stripping and/or sanding off the old finish. Then you have options about staining and sealing. A glaze might brighten them also.

    It's the shellac that's yellowed. Use a paint stripper and re-shellac, or use a water based polyurethane, less likely to yellow.
