How do I remove the top of an old oak rolltop desk?

The top cabinet appears to be glued on. I want to transform the desk into more of an executive style desk. What tools do I need and how do I proceed?

Ours just lifts off. It is held on with pegs. If yours is glued, that would be more challenging.

maybe you could try a hair dryer to warm the glue, then gently use putty knife or painters 5-in-1 tool to start separating the two pieces. Depending on the age of the desk, look on the underside of the top, sometimes they (the top roll part) are screwed in from the bottom. Have fun & enjoy!

I would sell the desk and buy one that is more your preferred style. Roll top desks are very popular and plain desks are more abundant.

Try the site listed below. also read thru the side bar links for more information. What you want to do requires a respectable level of skill to do right without ruining the project. Only you can determine if you are confident in going ahead with your plans. Best of luck. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/remove-glue-joints-99557.html
