How to stencil paint a furniture?
Hi DIYers, I would like to know the details below.
- What kind of Stencil should I use to paint over my Canadian Oak Almirah?
- Which category of paint is suitable if I directly paint on the existing coat (without using sand paper)?
- What should I use to seal the new paint?

Do you know what the finish is now on there? Without knowing I’d suggest chalk or mineral paint, nothing oil based.
Here is how I stenciled our floor, you could do the same thing for your furniture: https://www.aratariathome.com/blog/painted-tile-tutorial-entry-way-makeover-part-2

You can stencil right over the existing surface. Just clean well, use the stencil of your choice and then seal it all with a non-yellowing clear water based polyacrylic.
I highly suggest using a small roller. It has to have a really tight cover, not fluffy, and it gives the best, most even coverage.
Hello Salma, hope this helps you out, you can stencil right over the existing surfaces as you will seal them once complete.

Hi Salma, You can any stencil you like but make sure it is a good quality on that is thin. The thicker the stencils, the harder it will be to get a crisp line around the edges. I always use a paintbrush (and teach a stencilling class) but many people like to use rollers as well. Both work well. Since I assume there is a finish on your oak cabinet (there is typically a top coat of some sort) I would suggest a chalk paint (Annie Sloan) or a mineral paint like Fusion. Fusion is an acrylic paint so it will not need a top coat but Annie Sloan would need a coat of wax overtop since it is free of latex or acrylic. Hope that helps a bit!
Chalk paint should be good over existing but will need to be sealed. I’m not a big fan because it isn’t highly durable and I rarely re paint a piece less than 10 years.

Just use oil based paint. No sealer needed and most durable.
Hi Salma, there are lots of posts here on stenciling furniture:

I agree with Kelli's suggestion. An oil based paint will give you the best results if you don't want to sand and then you won't have to seal it either. Oil based paint is harder to work with though, takes a lot longer to dry and the only way to get it off of anything is with mineral spirits.
