When it comes to DIY projects, do you prefer Decorative or Functional?

functional
Both. I like my diy projects to look nice and have a function even if the function is to just look pretty.
Hi Sadie, It really depends on what I want or need. I do both! I also believe there people who do crafts and people who build. I happen to do both. Power tools to paper mache'.
Much luck with your blog!
I prefer functional
I prefer both! Anything Im going to be seeing daily needs to be esthetically pleasing. Purely decorative objects are for me, something that I have a history with or connection to; a vase I purchased in Germany, or an antique bowl purchased on an antique trip with my daughters, etc. I love that when someone asks about one of my objects I have a story to tell other than "I bought it online". Conversely, if I cant find a functional object that is attractive, I will DIY it until it is!
Hope this helps, and good luck!
I like both but prefer functional.
I enjoy both
Both! I enjoy making wreaths or door (or mantle) decor for the seasons or holiday or themed party, as well as pretty functional everyday items. Storage should be pretty as well as utilitarian. Love reusing or updating pieces I already own - I do not have a storage barn! Although would love one . . . 😊
functional for sure
Actually both, I do not like for lack of a better term "cheesy" crafts. Don't want anything to do with toiled paper rolls etc.
Since I do not consider myself an expert in anything (well maybe decoupage and Virginia Woolf!) I will answer this way. If you are an artistic person you of course would prefer decorative because that is who you are. However in expressing your art, you often acquire skills that are also useful in performing functional skills because your income demands that you need to. i.e. my husband is right now working on a life sized oil painting of me and at the same time is working on painting and repairing our front porch. He switches back and forth between functional and artistic but he also switches back and forth between functional and functional, and artistic and artistic. I used to sew a lot and probably liked doing artistic (!) like curtains, pillows etc. better than dresses (functional) although both are also artistic.
decorative
Function first.
Then decor.

functional
To twist William Morris's words a bit, I feel my home should be filled with things both useful and beautiful.
I'll never be a minimalist (but neither am I frilly) so I adore my colorful decor ( my style is bohemian lodge)
....and my functional areas must be aesthetically pleasing as well. My kitchen counter tops are clear of appliances except for the toaster and espresso machine. I have several colorful silicone "landing pads" at the ready so I don't break glassware on the granite.
I prefer thrift/antique stores and upcycling my treasures. I don't like "mass produced" stuff yet I just assembled a new Ikea dresser and I am pondering it's makeover.
I hope I never have to repeat my college dorm decor of milk crate bookcases or the table made of stacked cinderblocks topped with a large cutting board.
Interesting question! I first thought was "decorative" but I guess I also like functional items that are decorative!
