Why won't my Lap Top & Printer connect to each other?

Ever since I got my new printer I can't get it to connect to my Lap Top. I even called the company that made the printer & they were no help either. What I need is a LapTop with a disc drive because my printer came with a disc to connect the two together. But my LapTop does not have a disc drive & you can NOT find a LapTop that has a disc drive anymore. All because of these STUPID SmartPhones & other STUPID new gadgets that these companies come out with. So how is a person suppose to do anything if they do NOT have these things & do NOT want all these new gadgets? As you can tell is that I'm getting really FED-UP with all this stuff. For crying out loud I'm 64 & I do NOT need all this hassle to learn new things. It's all for these young kids NOT me.

Find a kid to google the print driver for your printer model and download it to your laptop. Sounds like that is all that is missing.

Unfortunately, like it or not, technology is here to stay. I have found that I either keep current or fall behind. I'm 76 and my Mom is 96, and we try our best to stay with the rest of the pack. It keeps my Moms mind sharp, and I'm hoping it does the same for me. The advice given is accurate, so bite the bullet and go for it...you will be glad you did.

I had to try and help on this one, because I am 63 years old and feel the same way about all this techno-garbage. My husband bought me a new smart phone and I don't even know how to answer it.

Anyway, back to your issue. If you have an ethernet cable plug the USB end into your computer and the other end into your ethernet port (it looks similar to a phone jack). Now attempt to connect to the printer, if it doesn't start automatically. On the new printers, the driver is usually stored within the printers firmware.

If that doesn't work out for you, go to the website for your printer and download the driver from there. You may have to search a bit, but it should be there, and just follow the installation instructions that will come with the download. Hope this helps.

Many times the store you purchased your printer, iPhone, etc., has classes that will teach you about your product. I used these classes, plus I went to my local junior college and took a beginner computer class. It did the trick. Plus, you’ll realize you’re not alone in your quest to”stay updated, technologically”! Good luck !!

What you need is a separate external disc drive. Connect it to your lap top with a USB cable. Then load the disc from your new printer. You can get one from Amazon for under $20. This is your best option. Good luck!

You need to find out if the printer and computer are compatible. Our Chrome won't work with our new printer since it doesn't support the cloud.

As I said before I HATE shopping online. Would rather shop at a physical store.

yes make sure laptop and printer are compatible, and that your computer is wireless

They are compatible. At least that's what it said on the box that the Printer came in.

it needs to be programmed then, either the printer or the laptop isnt recognized

  • I can't help you as I no longer own a computer or printer - they were costing me a fortune plus the service. I still have an old iPhone 4 which died on the evening of December 23rd and getting someone yesterday at the local verizon store was a waste of my time and a joke - they just want to sell you $1,000 iPhone 10's. I have been trying intermittently for the past 2 years to find someone o help me get the photos off my phone - they would not email. Since I do not have a land line, I am phoneless at the moment. I am half tempted to just get a cheap pay as you go phone . . .

And I am 100% with you about on line shopping, you can't determine quality from a computer screen, plus I only pay cash - imagine that??? 🙄

LOL agree, I just had to replace my laptop and was lucky to find an ASUS with a DVD drive. You might take your printer CD to a library or repair shop and take a thumb drive with you to copy it too so you can install your printer.

You should also be able to install your printer from the manufacturer's website.... I just did this on my new PC. Go to their website, and look for Downloads or Support on the menu, then you will have to put in your model # and should be able to set it up from there. I just did this for a client of mine, and did my own for HP and Epson.

  • Sue Sue on Dec 26, 2017

I agree. Easiest thing is to download driver for printer. I will definitely hang on to my laptop with CD player. Oh, just Google make and model of your printer -- you don't need a kid to do that. (I'm also in my 70's and couldn't live without a laptop. And a dumb phone is just fine.)

Tell you the truth I HATE Googling also. Every time I try all I get is a bunch of references & if I click on one I get more references then more & so on with no luck.

You can buy an external CD drive that plugs into the USB port on the laptop, but the EASIEST way would be to go to the manufacturer's website and either download the software OR do the install live there. I feel your pain with all this new "crap" that keeps coming out! I am 77, and believe me, it doesn't get any easier the older you get!! But I'm lucky because I have stayed ahead of all this stuff, I guess... most of us haven't!
