My new couch creaks, is this normal or can I fix it?

I have only had the couch a couple of weeks and it creaks the minute anyone moves on it. I love the couch, but the noise is annoying, and I don’t want to complain if this could just be the couch setting in.

  • It could just be the old springs. Try turning it over and see if anything needs tightening - screws in the wood, etc. If it's the springs, you may be able to put a little oil on them.

Look underneath to see if it has anything that is loose if there is an area where a shim could be inserted to stabilize.

If it's new I would get in touch where you bought it. Could be some loose joints. Springs rubbing against wood.

Hi Amy, you say "My new couch" in your post. Is the couch new and purchased from a furniture store? If so, contact the store and ask for customer service help an explain the problem to them. Perhaps they can send someone to remedy the problem.

If the couch is New call the store where you bought it. If it is new to you, start by turning over the creaking sofa and removing the dust cover (if it has one), so you can work on its underside. Then, tighten all screws, nuts and bolts that you can access, which can help stop wood joints from creaking. Those with metal framed-sofas should also use this opportunity to oil any old joint.

New furniture can creak as it beds in. Over time, with normal use, the surface becomes smooth and the creaking will reduce.

Sounds like the frame is loose it needs to be taken apart and glued then put back together.

Check for loose nails/screws. If not, its probably the springs. There are spring kits for couches here: https://amzn.to/3J1Rxtu

    Hope this Helps! Jeremy

After a few weeks, the new sofa creaking should subside and then stop all together as it becomes more familiar with your sitting position.

  • Check underneath to see if there are any loose parts or if there is a spot where a shim might be placed to provide stability. If it is new, I would contact the store where you purchased it. There might be some loose joints. Wood and springs rubbing together.

Check for obvious spots when and where you hear the creak, you may need help from someone to do this. If you get too invasive and enter areas of the furniture where it is intact, you might void any warranty you have on the couch. Also contact customer service with the make and model numbers, they can help.
