How can I fix a leaded stain glass onto a fence?

I would put it into a wood frame for support and then fasten it to the fence.

What climate are you in? Will this be outside in freezing temps?

I am not so sure this should be put outdoors unless you have some way to seal it , otherwise the lead will be washed into the soil.

You might be able to find a an existing picture frame at store or Goodwill type store. Places like Michael's or Hobby Lobby can make a frame any dimension.

You can either add loops with soldering or drill tiny holes in the glass. Then affix with a chain.

Like others have mentioned, you might be able to get a custom wood frame made at a local craft shop or frame shop. I think that might be the best option, as you'd want the glass to be really secure in its frame.

If you can make a wooden frame for it do so, if not get someone else to do it for you. and then you have the choice to add eye hooks around the frame. You could then fix with hooks or wires or screws etc.

Hi Teresa, I do stained glass so I might be able to help. First question....sounds like you have a metal frame that goes all the way around the glass? If so, that frame is probably not lead but zinc. That is a good thing that you have a metal frame on it. That will make the glass in it pretty secure. However zinc will corrode being outdoors. Is this area you want to hang it covered at all?

Adding a wooden frame around it would make it more secure however won't be for outdoor use.....You would need outdoor pressure treated wood and painted with outdoor paint, and to get a woodworker to make a frame for stained glass is VERY expensive. Frames for stained glass are not the same type of frames that you frame a picture in. It's not just a ledge....its more of a pocket for the glass to be inside it which is made with a special bit on the router making the wooden frame. This is why the wooden frames are so expensive for stained glass.

My next question....do you have rings soldered to the metal frame? If so, that is great. You would just need to go to your local hardware store and get chain to add to the rings so that you can hang it. The only problem with this is that the chain may not be stainless steel and could rust.

If you don't have rings on it.....you would have to solder strong rings to the top 2 corners of your metal frame. If you can't do this, see if you can go to a metal shop where they can do this for you easily. This is a very easy thing to do and should not cost you a lot of money. But again...you have to worry about what type of metal the rings are made out of. You want to add stainless steel rings on it so it won't rust.

Soooo...in the end, do you have to hang it outdoors? This adds a lot of complication. You say that it was outdoors already, just see if you can get chain and rings that won't rust. Good luck! I hoped I helped.

Hi Teresa, you would be best to frame it with wood, then you can attach the wood frame safely to the fence, and solidly. Here's a great frame, no mitering involved. But you could try to buy a pre-made frame for it as well,

My daughter's father -in-law framed stained glass he made as the top part of a fence. It's gorgeous but I would always worry about it. Good luck and stay well!

If it hails in your area I would never hang stained glass outside. I have a framed stained glass picture I would never hang outside.
