got new gutters but I wanted the water to run away from the house so I put an extension on it to go further out in the yard, now I see that the water is leaking out of the area where I attached the extension, what can I put on that area to keep the water from leaking out ???? In order to maintain them, does anyone have information on how to clean gutters? FLEX SEAL? 7-10-20 icon THANKS STAY SAFE, 6 FT, WASH YOUR HANDS....

  • Flex seal should do it, but have you tried angling it more?

It shouldn’t be leaking. Are the gutters or downspouts full of leaves?

Hi Sandy, I hope these help you out, also, if the gaps are not too large, you could try to seal them with a silicone sealant

Hi Sandy. Flex seal is a good idea. I'm also wondering if a marine adhesive would work. Good luck Sandy.

Lowes has a few silicon tubes of stuff that might help.

    It is 100% water proof.

    Has 10 mold free protection.

Is water ready in 30 minutes.

    Has a lifetime guarantee.

Made by GE and comes in white (might be more I just am familiar with that color).

It costs around $10 a 3 oz. tube.

Any chance you put the extension in the wrong direction of water flow? Flex Seal will work for a while. Weather and UV rays break it down after a while. It's great for a temporary fix. They do sell gutter tape that would last longer.

    Hello Sandy,

Why not fix a down pipe and direct it where you want it to go and an end cap to the gutter? These items can be found in your DIY Store or online. You may even be able to pick up instructions on how to do the job too. Best wishes

Hello. We have buried gutter drains but the extension used was screwed on apparently there are special gutter screws that are short that will connect segments or parts. This might be a possibility for your problem.

I believe they did use the smaller screws, I DUE BELIEVE I HIT THE EXTENSION PIPE WHEN I WAS CUTTING THE GRASS... :-( THANKS

You might have to purchase some gutter screws to hold it in place.

Your downspout/extension should run at least 10' from your home's foundation. Your ground may also need some attention to correct the slope to provide faster runoff. In a very heavy downpour, the average sized downspout may be inadequate for your needs.

Here in Oregon where it rains profusely, we dig down and put the extensions into the yard and then rebury them. Keeps water from pooling around the foundation.

Yes that is what we did also. But we bury the extensions so they run into a french drain. That was almost 20 years ago and never a problem.

Sandy...you may have popped those small screws out when you hit the extension. Check to make sure that those screws are still holding both pieces of gutter together! oh...a thought just popped into my head LoL

does the downspout fit 'into' the extension pipe or does the extension slide into downspout??

The downspout should fit into the extension! If it's set up the other way then water leaks out of the downspout before it even has a chance to go into the extension!

Jeez did that just make any sense?? LoL

    Good luck Sandy!!

It shouldn’t leak, like Sandy explained.

If you’re going to do new screw holes, everyday window & door caulk will fix the old holes.
