Broken drain cover.
Broken tub drain cover fix?
We had a plumber install drain covers that would pop up to unplug, but by the end of the summer rental season - they were all broken in three tubs.
I'm thinking of caulking a mesh drain cover, then having a flat silicon cover next to the tub to cover the drain. What's the best way to do this - or other suggestions. Thanks, Jim

Your fixture in the bottom of the tub can be unscrewed and replaced with the standard one with a link to connect with the lever on the back of the overflow plate. The double ended wrench is inexpensive.
We had the pop-up system in our tub and kept stubbing our toes on it, it eventually was bent and not functioning well. To make a simple fix, we unscrewed it and left it open with a dollar store mesh cover, this works well for us. The mesh cover comes in a pack of 2, so 1 fit the tub drain and 1 went to the kitchen. These traps will need a routine clean out from hair.
Hope this helps.
We used a mesh drain cover once and it worked great. It was not caulked in.
Caulk will not last long. Just buy mesh cover that insert in the drain. and a rubber/silicone cover. The mesh cover will need to be removed and cleaned from hair buildup.
If you are looking for mesh drain covers amazon has a lot of choose from:
https://www.amazon.com/mesh-shower-drain-cover/s?k=mesh+shower+drain+cover
If that doesn't cover exactly what you are looking for you can tweak the serach to exactly what you want.
Lowes sells magnetic drain covers and they work great. No more pop up isues.
You can buy mesh screens that fit into those drains we bought ours at amazon

I wouldn't caulk it, it'll just create a mess when it dissolves. I would buy several of the cheap ones and keep them handy. They work the best.
Hello. For rentals I agree your cost effective option is well recommended.
A flat drain cover might be helpful…a more inexpensive version locally sourced might look like this

I use a golf ball ! LOL
You can buy those mesh drain covers, that would be the easiest fix!
I had a similar problem and got some silicone drain plugs on Amazon, like a cork shaped type. They work great.
Well, I live in a golf community there are balls everywhere! LOL, all different colors too!
