Is it an area rug, or mat? If it's a mat for wiping your feet, how about putting it on the other side of the door?
Unless you want to shave down the bottom of your front door, , I would move the rug.
Skip the rug, use a good mat on the outside. Cutting down an entry door is a bad idea as when the door is closed, you lose proper sealing and will lose heat, a/c not to mention creepy crawly bugs entering your home.
If it is a solid wood door it can be taken off and sanded or planed to allow for the rug.
I had the same issue! We ended up moving the rug back away from the door span.
It sounds like you have a good weather seal on your door that you really don't want to mess with. Invest in an outside mat that you can put on the outside of the door
Treat the problem from the outside, get a mat there or some kind of a grid there to wipe feet on.
