For the showers and baths, small, for the floor large if that is what you like!
Large tiles make the room appear larger.
Go with large tiles.
I have 12 by 12 in my very small bathroom. Looks great.
I have seen the DIY guys on TV use larger format tiles for tub and showers, even in a really small bathroom or powder room.... the smaller tile sheets are best for shower floors... as they conform to the drainage slope better.
You could do a herringbone or chevron pattern on the back of the shower or on the bathroom floor for interest... or set subway tile (large or small format) vertically to make the room look taller. DIYnetwork.com or HGTV.com or Pinterest.com will have lots of ideas for you
