How do I add a window or faux window to a modern hollow interior door?

I want my under-the-stairs half-bath to have a whimsical Edwardian feel. I’m attaching a photo of what I hope to achieve.

I’ve considered cutting out a window, frosting it, and adding the decal, but to do so would actually require cutting two windows—one on each side )the outside one with the decal and the interior one as plain frosted)—plus framing on each side for a hollow door.

Is there another option besides replacing the whole door? Something faux?

I think this project might be of some help:

You seal them up with wood. Think of similar to a window frame on the wall.

I think your best bet would be to find a door with a window in it. An architectural salvage place would be where to look. Also if you post a pic of the bath and door it would help to get answers.

Of course I can see the picture of what you want to achieve and of course I know what a hollow core door looks like. But I (and no one else) can see the environment that you wish to change. BTW can you not see the difference in the quality of the room you show as your desired result and the image below it of the cheaper door. Just compare the sizes of the two windows.

You wouldn't need two sheets of glass you could but the decal on the frosted glass. Look into plexiglass too. That might be safer than real glass. Framing glass into a hollow core door shouldn't be too hard you can use pre milled trim pieces to hold the glass in place.

Could you clarify why you think I’d only need to cut one side? As it’s a window, I think the backside of the inner layer would show through the glass, wouldn’t it? I want the decal to be clearly visbale as light were shinning through.

Though, as I’m typing this, I wonder if painting the backside of the inner door white wouldn’t make it seem as though it’s see-through.

Do you want something that also brings in additional light or just a picture large poster of a window frame with a subject in it?

I bought a large (3x4 feet) picture with the outside of the picture being a partially open window. Hung sheers on a rod and I have had people ask if it was a a real window or not. Use amazon's search feature to find these have have LOTS of different types of pictures (beach, forest, desert, etc.) and cost less then $50.

    No

  • Cutting a hollow door may be more work than anticipated. Look for the type of door you want at a salvage yard.
