See how a backyard in need of a focal point and gathering spot comes alive with a simple to build fire pit.
With a little research under our belts, basic measuring tape skills, and a humble shovel, we measured, dug and stacked our way to a rewarding fire pit in a few short hours.
This yard began as a river rock garden bed. A lot of work went into making it a usable lawn space as shown in this post: http://domeasurablymore.com/2014/09/removing-a-river-rock-flower-bed/. But, now it needed a focal point, a place to gather and something fun!
The fire pit ring is built to accommodate the size of our existing fire bowl (a travel version with removable legs). Note our extremely precise method for determining the hole placement; in retrospect, a ring made with spray paint or even sprinkled flour would have been helpful!

It is important to have lots of helpers for this project of course! These kiddos brushed up on their planning, measuring, calculating and teamwork skills. This fire pit ended up being a life skill lesson that will last as long as the fire pit itself.
Go ahead! Build a fire pit! It's easier than you may think and well worth the investment! We couldn't wait to get the fire lit and thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful and rewarding family evening under the stars.

Wish we would have seen this before starting on our own fire pit. It looks alot easier than what we done-nicer, too.
