As soon as we purchased our 1980's fixer upper, I knew I wanted to mount our flatscreen tv on the brick fireplace. I wanted only one focal point, and I knew if I placed the tv elsewhere, it would be competing with the focal point of the fireplace. The only problem was that there was no pre-exisitng cable or electrical outlet on our brick fireplace.
If your home was built before the advent of flatscreen televisions, chances are you may be struggling with the same dilemma. After consulting with multiple electricians, I was told it would not be feasible to run electrical into our brick fireplace. But, I was determined to find a way to make it work.
We first had our cable company install a cable outlet on the left side of the fireplace (on the sheetrock wall). We then routed the cable down the side of the fireplace with wiremold.
I hid the cable outlet behind a large boutique mirror as you can see. To disguise the wiring, I used a white cable cord and white wiremold. If your fireplace is not white, you could use the color closest to that of your fireplace.
I used a white extension cord and, once again white wiremold. to route the electrical cord down the right side of the fireplace down to an electrical outlet.

And for those of you old-schoolers claiming a tv should never be mounted over a fireplace because of potential damage to the tv, our television has remained unharmed through several wood-burning fires.
