Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse Sign

We moved into our house in November and we have this large brick "chimney" in the center of our living room/kitchen/dining room area. Some may be indifferent to it, but it's a huge focal piece in a room that's very open and is the main living space in the house. I really wanted something up there that had sentiment and really filled the space up, so I decided to make a Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse Sign. The whole thing took a few hours to make, some wood, paint, and vinyl and I've already had someone ask me if I got that in Waco, Texas when we visited Magnolia Market last month.
This was the space before...a dumping ground for my home decor I didn't have time to use yet. The space is tall, so I knew I needed something large to fill it up.
You want to start with a blank board cut to the size you like....in my case I did a 36" x 26" board. You'll paint the board the color you want your letters to be.
Next, using my cutting machine, I applied vinyl to my sign using a font I purchased online. Visit my blog, The Cards We Drew, to see more of this process and how you can email me to get the cutting machine files.
Once your vinyl is applied, you paint the sign white over top of the vinyl and let it dry. Then slowly peel the vinyl off to reveal the letters.
The final step is staining some 1x2's to make the edges of your sign and using a nail gun or wood glue to secure them onto the edges.
Then behold the masterpiece you've created for a FRACTION of the price of the "real thing" and the knowledge that you did it all by yourself!!
I chose some lyrics that speak true to our 1,700 square foot home and how "love grows in little houses, just like this."

Enjoy!

I LOVE this sign, I have tried thinking of ways to make this but I don't own a cutting machine. And all stencils seem to come in capitol letters only from any I have seen...
