We think broken china mosaics are so charming! They remind us of tea parties, English gardens, and grandma. So we are so delighted to share one of our favorite mosaic projects - A Broken China Mosaic Birdhouse!
To get started, we gathered china plates at garage sales and thrift stores. (This part was fun!) Sometimes you can find a chipped plate for less than a dollar. We looked for plates with flat areas of pretty flowers.
Next, we used tile nippers to cut the plates into tile shapes. Tile nippers are available at craft stores and online for about $10. Totally worth it. They make cutting plates so easy!
To mosaic the birdhouse, we glued the broken china "tiles" to the roof and sides. We added porcelain roses too. This is the part when you can get really creative. Add a border around the eaves. Add a special "tile" over the door. It's your chance to make this project your own.
Next we mixed the grout and spread it over the tiles. This step always freaks us out a little because it seems like the mosaic is getting ruined. Fear not! Just wipe the excess grout off. Then buff the tiles. We promise it will turn out gorgeous!
When your birdhouse is done, seal it with grout sealer and set it out in the garden. Then put a bird on it!
